If you are even somewhat serious about bodybuilding, you would have probably heard that whey protein is very important to aid muscle growth. Most of the fitness articles would also say that you have to consume about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. Since the hype of whey protein started, many experts have started to take a closer look at whey protein to see if too much of it can be harmful in any way.
This article will do that as well and explain some of the dangers that whey has to offer.
Muscle Protein Shakes
Basically, the dangers of whey protein are related to the consumption levels. For the people who take a shake every now and then, it will not present any dangers. However, for those who take it several times in a day and over a long period of time, it can definitely lead to the following dangers,
· Danger to the kidney - Whey protein is not easily digested. Thus, if one were to consume a lot of it and not exercise accordingly, protein will be available in excess which will then need to be processed by the kidneys. Over a long period of time, there have been some cases where protein consumption was linked with a kidney failure. A kidney failure is however rare and more often than not, the kidneys are rather affected by disease.
· Danger to the liver - Another key organ in the body that is directly affected when there is too much of a certain substance in the body is the liver. High levels o whey protein in the body will lead to an increase in the ketone level in the blood which can cause ketosis of the liver. Again, this is something that happens over a long period of time.
· Imbalance of essential minerals - A heavy intake of whey protein can create an imbalance in the chemical composition of the body. Studies have indicated that the mineral bone density has the potential to be affected with repeated consumption of whey protein. It can also lead to the formation of uric acid in the muscles and bones of the body. The result of these accumulations will be rigidness and pain in the bones and muscles. This form of rigidness and joint pain is called gout and it is very common among professional bodybuilders who take ridiculous amounts of whey protein in their everyday diet.
As you can see, most of the dangers related to whey are related to a very high and constant intake over a long period of time. If you however are taking a few shakes in a week to aid your workouts, it should not really be able to do much harm.
